What are you growing ?

S7300674When a weed grows up among the plants it must be plucked out and discarded,or it will grow seed and multiply. Are you sowing the evil seeds of discord and division ? If you are shame on you. We must sow the seeds of peace and unity. There is too much evil and fighting in this world already. How can we fight a common enemy when we fight among ourselves ? The tree that bears no fruit will be cut down and cast on the fire. We must grow roots downward and bear fruit upward.

Blessed are the peacemakers.

  1. Amen Korn. It's time for everyone to calm down and get back to the business of ripping apart the REAL enemies of the people.

We must not let one member cause such divisiveness amongst us again. To tear apart one part of the group, is to tear apart all of the group. Isn't that what coto is supposed to be about?

People that spew hatred for members of the opposite sex,(man or woman) homosexuals and an entire race of people should NEVER be given a free pass by coto.

An apology is owed by cinderman to the entire group. Until that happens, he can go pound sand, IMHO.

  2. I know we are all carrying stored up anger for all sorts of reasons, but we need to keep the dialogue on a more intellectual level.
By the way those are black-eyed peas growing in the field and they are doing really good !

  3. I have a sister-in-law who weeds... but she does not winnow (prune? sorry- I'm still learning)... she does not pull up the "weak" plants. She says she feels like she's practicing "eugenics."

A Miami Woman (the Indian tribe- not the Florida city) once told me: "there ARE NO weeds on Turtle Island." To make her point, she had the whole group gather selected plants. She gave me one (looked like a weed to me) and told me to "...pick a bunch of these."

We ended up with a big trash-bag full of (what looked to me like) lawn clippings. With this she prepared a (delicious) meal for 15 people... and we all ate until we were stuffed. See... I'm working a metaphor here... Ecclesiastes 3:1:

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. So I'll let Paladin lay a bit more Ecclesiastes on y' ass:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpCUTYl_W8Y

JG: you and I probably have different ideas about the one member who caused such divisiveness amongst us. But that's OK.

"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit."

Words are like seeds. I wish I had Miami Woman's wisdom of plants... but words have been my living. That is why I detest "language police." There ARE NO "weeds" on Turtle island. There are no "bad words," only "bad thoughts." I cannot judge the intent of another on their use of a word without the opportunity to question the speaker (or writer).

I CAN JUDGE the abuse of "power," the ability of one to silence another at the touch of a button. Offended at the "coont" word? Of course I am. I have a wife and a daughter and I love them with all my heart. But this is KK's thread... not mine. I would say (from the plant standpoint) that we may want to rethink "mono-culture."

Perma-culture (as far as my weak ability to understand it) allows the plants themselves to determine what grows among them and what does not. I understand ye gotta do a bit o' work to get them to get along... ad I understand it... but we should re-think mono-culture.

That's ONLY my opinion. I COULD BE wrong.

  5. Waldo, I'm not going round with this again but trust me it was more than one word. More was said than you know of. And yes, I agree, the whole issue should have been handled differently.

Now, let's all just get along, shall we?

  6. JerseyG asked me on the now missing thread:

“Scott? If you are talking egotistical you must mean cinderman….. right?”

    my response:

still trying to get me to answer “the right way” as oldschool talked about (of course, I can’t point that comment out, because the THREAD seems to be gone)?

No, to answer your question… “egotistical” refers to comments like this one…

    “Here’s the deal, guys.
You pick: a foul-mouthed racist, sexist bigot who has posted 3 items to COTO, or your Jewish and female volunteers who have posted over 200 items to COTO.
You can defend hate speech all you want, but there is a consequence to hate speech and it is that we will leave you to your fouled nest.
We will take our efforts elsewhere.”

    That is egotistical.

It was also written by the individual who took it upon herself to ban a fellow member without consulting the rest of the members.

That is egotistical. But don’t take my word for it… take someone else’s… someone made a very similar comment on the now missing thread. If you can see it, you can find it.

  7. What do you mean the thread is missing? The entire article or just certain comments?

    ReplyDelete
  8. And let me ask this question once again (Someone should have the decency to answer a contributing member of this site who spend 6 hours last night simply trying to help mend a rift 2 other members caused).

There was a lot of good writing on that thread that is now missing. you all know how I feel about removing comments... and now 91 of them have been wiped out?

an explanation has been asked for in a polite manner. I think an explanation is owed.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The entire article is gone, JerseyG.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I posted the comment directly below this one of yours before you posted this one... I don't mean for it to sound snarky (is that really a word?)...

... it is more directed to Admins here that have the ability to wipe out entire threads of someone elses creation...

... I don't think you are one of those. And even if you are, I don't think you removed the thread...

    just so you know...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Scott, that may have been my fault. I still see the article with all the comments, including Radys. I made the post private...which is supposed to mean for members eyes only. I certainly don't want anyone outside our group to read about our bickering especially those from that "other place".

Apparently private doesn't mean what I thought it meant. If it was me, I can fix it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. In my opinion, it wasn’t C’fella who caused the divisiveness, it was the banning of c’fella what caused the divisiveness.
And anyway, certain folks CHOSE to divide themselves from certain majorities of the group due to personal prejudices
And misconstrued intent. And now, to call for peace and in the same breath continue to bait reminds me of some
Other group of people who just HAVE to get in the last word. Fine. But “settle down”?!!! When was the last time so many people got so fired up about an issue and had so many constructive things to offer? I found the exchanges challenging and interesting and educational. I was mildly offended at being lumped together with a perceived group due to the genitalia with which I have been endowed. But what are ya gonna do? Rant and rave and get all hissy? I submit that y’all have no idea what is in the heart of another until you have walked a mile in his shoes, or flip flops, as it were….
    Alooooooooooooooooooooooooooha!

  13. JerseyG;

Thank you for the explanation... and I understand why you wanted to make it private.

Just for future reference: Admins and Editors (I think) can see ALL "private" threads, along with the person who created it...

The rest of us, Writers, Contributors, ect... cannot see them once they go "Private"... I don't know why that is. It's a WordPress thing.

I hope that helps in the future. and again, thanks for the explanation.

  14. litnup.. that's your opinion and you are entitled to it just as I am to mine.

I did not ban him nor did I advocate banning him. However, I think he's full of anger and hatred and I don't have to like that now do I? Or do I litnup? Is that what you're saying with all your free speech mantra and all of that?

Do you want this to go on forever or DO YOU WANT TO JUST DROP IT? All Cinder has to do is apologize for his misogynistic and racist remarks and he gets reinstated.. I call that FAIR.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thank you scott. I am only editor status and had no clue. The only editing I have ever done, until today, is of my own spelling errors and that's the truth.

I'm assuming the article is back in place for all to see?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think some good ideas came out of it. Primarily, a pre-existing process for ANY banishment AT ALL of contributing COTO members (comments/articles/toe-nail clippings... all equal in my book) is a great idea.

People should have a right to defend their stupid comments before being silenced. Silencing them certainly makes for an easier argument (kinda one sided) but I am not so sure it's "fair".

And I agree with Litnup again: this wasn't about a comment, it was about a bad decision to ban the man made unilaterally by ONE person, who then not only refused polite suggestions that she may want to rethink the move, but she flat out played the "him verses US" game, directly causing even MORE divisions between us.

By the way, I want to thank you Litnup for writing that article in the first place.

Frankly, I was very disturbed by C-mans banishment. I am glad you took the initiative to write that article, so we could clear the air about this.

In the long run, I think this will end up helping us a lot more than it hurts us.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't think Cinder meant to insult you Jersey. He gets carried away and says stupid things sometimes.

Puddy suggested yesterday that a private email from him to you, might put this behind us all so we can move on.

Is that something that you would support?

    ReplyDelete
  18. This isn't personal Scott. This has to do with respect for your fellow coto'ers and people in general.

Stupid things? I'm not jewish and I was insulted when he said he refuses to deal with jews because they are all liars and thieves. That's not a stupid remark, that's a way of life.

Saying Cannot Understand Normal Thinking to describe women in general is also not a stupid remark, it's an attitude.

What are you talking about? An email from whom? Cinder? No thank you. He can apologize to the group in public.

If you and litnup and some of the others want to continue on with this discussion, have at it. I'm done with it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He owes me no apology. Rady does. And I have the emails to prove it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Cinder knows what he must do. Eat a great deal of crow. Which, I'll wager, we have all had to do at one time or another in our lives.

    But we must move on.

We all know what we must do. And that is to persevere. To continue to speak the truth and report the facts as much and as often as possible.

While we are not the only truth tellers, we do know that there is much work to do. Before the vaccinations. Before the end of the dollar. Before the riots and revolutions overtake us. Before the end of all that we value and cherish is upon us. Before we are ended. And our children's lives are ended.

Fighting those fights is what we must do. There is great evil afoot.

    (pardon the ineloquent waxing)

  21. What's that??? JG: on the base of your writing, I love you like a daughter... BUT... ex-CUSE-fucking me??? "More was said than you know of." What is THIS???

THAT is EXACTLY what the PTB told me before you (or Rady) WERE BORN. I carried too many friends to the hole... I got too many scars on my body and my soul... to listen to THAT CRAP.

YOU are telling ME that I don't know the "secret details," so STFU and "move ON???" IS THAT IT?? Sorry... that's bullox... that's pish... that's CRAP. DO YOU know what it's like to carry a Brother to the hole because he was caught up in forces he could not understand... BECAUSE NOBODY TOLD HIM THE TRUTH?? DO YOU know what it's like to tell his daughters why Mommy shot herself because she just couldn't deal with it???

SO YOU are going to break up a vital dialogue that was started BEFORE YOU WERE BORN because YOU CAN'T HANDLE the naughty no-no "C-word?" Or the nasty poo-poo "J-Word?" Have you ever sponged the brains of a guy you grew up with off a bathroom floor so his wife and daughter would not have to see his meat when they tinkled??? Have YOU stood in the knee-deep ashes at Birkenau and begged G_d to strike you dead NOW because you just did not UNDERSTAND any of this??

"More was said than you know of? " OH REALLY?? I don't fucking THINK SO. YOU twerpy CHILDREN presume WAY TOO MUCH... BUT...

THAT'S just MY opinion. I COULD be WRONG.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Rady doesn't give diddly-squat about a "cause" or anything else.... only about "clicks-and-eyeballs" and her own "career."

That's just my opinion. I HOPE I AM WRONG.

  23. You're not wrong at all...

This is a small part of an email she sent to me last night when I simply asked her to reinstate Cinder in order to help heal the rift in our site that this thing has created. This is part of what she said...

"This is not a power struggle or an ultimatum; this is me protecting my good name, my contacts, and my incredible efforts to reach people with important information." Rady

  25. Kornisking, i have Cabbage , Caulis and broccoli in now, a tad late, but weathers likely to remain cool for just long enough I hope.
I am waiting for the tractor to be repaired to rearrange 2acres for a Permie haven.
My birthday last Thurs, and I was given a magnificent walnut tree:-)
    6ft and solid so beautiful.
It will go next to my antique Mulberry tree for company.
I bought myself an English Oak, a weeping willow, Gingko tree, and a Dutch Medlar.
3 silver birch and a London Plane tree.
I debated over bothering if the world continues to head to "hell" or 2012 cataclysm happens, but..
somehow, I just have to hope that something of the world would endure, regardless of stupid humanitys best/worst efforts.

Now heres as philosophical as I get.
When someone dies, or your hearts broken, an old enlglish habit is "tell it to the bees"
    (originally royals etc I think?)
    I do it!
It means you have to go out into Nature and look and listen to find the bees, and the flowers.
    and
should you be there, then for most of us, it's hard to remain unaware of the beauty and continuity in the world of nature.
and it offers Balm to a soul.

Maybe we could all go tell the bees, and take some deep calm breaths hey?

  26. You dont repair Your own tractor ? What kind is it ? We have a John Deere 1954 model 70 LPG with 45 horsepower. There were 4 fig trees and a pear tree here when we moved in. We planted limes, mandarins, apples, pomegranites, avocados and plan to put more trees in, they are much less trouble than row crops. We are having real problems with corn earworms, weevils, squash beetles, spider mites and gophers. Phylium mold killed ALL my pinto beans. We did real good this year with cherry tomatoes, zuchini, canteloupes, watermelon and okra. I have eaten so much watermelon its coming out My ears !

  27. Not my tractor:-(, I wish! need an auto one..and even a tiny dingo digger s/hand is round 8Kmin, an old grey ferguson is 3 to 4 and they are known, to flip...bobcats are round 10 too. so I am relying on my beekeeping friends latest purchase, and it needs a tyre and hydraulics...2 months behind,, there goes the spelt, and soon the window for wheat.:-(
avocado died in cold, persimmon died in heat, I have 2 hazelnuts 3 pistachios ,apricot, a rare 20 oz apple variety, a cox's orange pippin apple, pink grapefruit ,blood orange, will be raiding quince cutting soon from neighbours yard, swap a mulberry one:-) black fig, a Bay Laurel for my namesake, need some old grapes for a summer shade, I have a kaffir lime, they are the basis for many of my stirfries I love the taste. a normal lime, and a not so happy tangerine, worried I may loose it.
Just bought a brilliant book, Acres USA will have it, or hunt it s/hand.
mainline farming for the 21st century, last sector has some superb energy/colour/nutrient solutions for foliar rescues.
spider mites are the pits, ditto the rest.
have you ever tried? bug pepper!
catch and squish the bugs, then either make a liquid and spray it over, OR burn them in a can, with maybe some of the diseased and weeds that bug you, and then mix the ash with water, and then spray that round.
beans dont like copper so I am a bit struck for a remedy there.
whats the Cation Exchange rate like? hows your calcium in soil?
any known soil deficiencies in the state you reside in?
(here are- selenium and iodine short, iron heavy, lime none, and lotsa silica.)
and the handiest bug removers on the planet...Chickens! let em in, and just wire cover the ripe fruits.
I am looking forward to planting Cream of Seskatchewan white watermelon this summer, had some 4 years ago and they are superb.
and one called Moon and Stars, big and little golden spots all over a dark green skin:-)
for fun, have a look at www.diggers.com.au heaps of heirlooms:-)

I however am stunned, by the closeness of those front wheels and the thin ness of the rears..
is it really stable? or is all the land flat?
do you guys fill the rears with water for weight and grip?
I read a report where dept stores and now home gardens in several states have a fungal outbreak,
not phyllium but phytopthera strain, related to vineyard problem type.
causing mould on leaves of tomato and related solanums. and brown soft spots in fruits.
a copper sulphate on them should assist, but beans, mm, I would burn all plant material and maybe even the soil there to knock what you can off, OR spray soils with a copper to kill the fungal spores.
plain ordinary milk will help stop grape and pumkin vines from downy mildew if thats any help.
oh and I am in Victoria. australia, area called the Wimmera, flat and sandy. my land luckily has a slope and some clay subsoil, but its leached and long neglected. however its also completely farm chem free for 30+years, and will stay that way:-)
soil samples show very good mix of bacterium and even found an amoeba and many little friends of plants, rotifers and celiates- cute little boogers:-)I film via a microscope and try and get farmers to see how the chem fert and pesticides kill the biota that make the food available to the plants, some, do get it, some, i despair!
I have applied rock dust, some clean horse manures thrown around, chooks roam, dogs poop, many dung beetles!! literally millions hatch on warm spring nights.

  31. Its a water-borne fungus that lives in wet soil under the irrigation ditches. Pintos seem hard to grow. Black-eyes are the way to go. They are drought resistant, bug resistant and just real hardy. When you cut the peas they come back repeatedly. Cow-peas got My parents through the last depression.

  33. Brother korn,

in our, not solely my garden, we is growing green beans, they call the stalk beans here, sweet pees, zucchini, pickles, potatos, three different kinds of tomatoes, one an upside downer, german turnips, white and blue, mediterranean stalk cellery, long, mild radishes that aren't worth the effort because they're rotting before they grow, pastinaken (??), carrots, fennel, four different kinds of salad and a whole bunch of herbs & spices. Our garden is super tiny and I wish I had more land and a massey ferguson to rip it up.

Did you know that what you're doing is probably the smartest, most sensible thing anyone can do these days? The trend is set. At least in some places. Take a look around you and look at all the yards that were once gardens. Watch how they turn to gardens again. Like magic.

We've had a cold, wet summer so far. Gardening has been fun and I've learned new tricks but the amount we harvest is really symbolic.

    My partner says to me the other day, in a tearn tone, "go out and get stuff for a salad for two". This is what I got;

  35. You guys are so far ahead of me. I have one grape tomato plant in a pot and a green pepper plant in a pot. I have about 30 green tomatoes so far and the pepper plant has flowers.

How soon after the flowers will I actually start to see peppers sprout?

    ReplyDelete
  36. JG, as soon as the blossoms wilter, the fruit begins to grow. Well, almost. It kind of goes hand in hand. Gardening in pots btw, is a great solution. Many plants prefer mother earth but we have to go with what we have. If a balcony is all we have, we can go vertical. A lot of things (edible) can even be grown indoors.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks Curt. I live in a townhome and have a tiny yard? which is postage stamp size. Pots are the easiest way for me to go especially since I don't have a lot of time to spend gardening. I'm new at this. (city girl) so I'm starting out small.. very small....
