Government tightening food safety standards

WASHINGTON – New safety standards aimed at reducing salmonella and E. coli outbreaks are part of a government effort to try to make food safer to eat.

A food safety panel established by President Barack Obama developed the new rules for eggs, poultry, beef, leafy greens, melons and tomatoes as well as for better coordination and communication among the agencies overseeing the nation's food supply.

The panel was to announce Tuesday that the Food and Drug Administration and the Agriculture Department would adopt the standards, which follow a string of breakdowns in food safety.

Earlier this year a massive salmonella outbreak in peanut products sickened hundreds, was suspected of causing nine deaths and led to one of the largest product recalls in U.S. history. In the past month, Nestle Toll House cookie dough and 380,000 pounds of beef produced by the JBS Swift Beef Co. of Greeley, Colo., have been recalled due to connections with outbreaks of E. coli.

In March, Obama said he would create a special advisory group to coordinate antiquated food safety laws and recommend ways to update them. The FDA does not have enough money or workers to conduct annual inspections at more than a fraction of the 150,000 food processing plants and warehouses in the country, Obama said.

Under the new rules:

_The FDA will help the food industry establish better tracing systems to track the origins of a bacterial outbreak.

  1. Yes and let's not forget who is in charge of the dept of agriculture... Tom Vilsack who is Monsanto's boy. No, food will be MORE contaminated than ever and organic farms will be put right out of business.

Also, Codex Alimentarius is headed our way like a freight train...What is Codex? Read a summary here:

I know is all government bullshit which is the reason why I posted it. The gist here is not - we know why even if they're lying about it - the idea here is that it's coming. From my Communist days, I learned to read a piece the way I eat a lobster: pick thru all the junk and leave only the good parts.

BTW, did you notice the source? Everytime I see AP, I assume it's bullshit, lies and misinformation for sure.

I read this as they're coming out with so many bullshit rules that they'll make it impossible for the small farmers to meet all of the 'requirements' thus opening the way entirely for the big boys. Am I right?

  6. anyone notice the big boys lobbied to reduce cost to each "establichment" Regardless of volume of output!!!! not mentioned anywhere!
so Unilever pays $500 (more would have sent them broke you know~) and so does bob the Farmer.
output variety profit is of no account???
also ever noticed that apart from Melamine (so much for QA standards) Even third world foods along with small producers have NEVER had a recall I can find!
2 in Sth Aus a few years back ( small, but NOT very small companies -until they ramped up volumes, never was a problem at all!) one was unpasteurised OJ and one was salami, BOTH companies went under. Now we have gross pasteurised OJ and Cooked( ugh )salamis and smallgoods and they are no way nice.
and heres the latest Industry announcement.

IN the same newsletter the EFSA have agreed to ALLOW a fair bit larger volume of AFLATOXIN content in tree nuts!!!!!!!!!!!! try 150 up from 50.
so? who is bullshitting whom? codex notwithstanding.

It's interesting that you mention that there are no recalls on 3rd world countries and that reminded of a story. The last time I went to Cuba to visit my family, there was a guy with a kiosk (I'm being generous here with the use of the word kiosk) set up across the street from my family's house. He'd be out there at the crack of dawn with quartered pigs hanging from hooks from the roof of the kiosk. These are pigs raised in a small farm (they're all organic in Cuba by default) which I'm sure he and his family owned, killed and he brought to town to sell. The temps were in the high 90s and that sun was beating down like a sun of bitch, no refrigeration, no AC, no screens to protect from the bugs and dirty, no nothing. He'd be out there till all the meat was sold. And not one person ever gets sick from that! Now, what the hell do you make of that?

Now, on the other side of the spectrum, I had lunch with a very shrud, savvy and well-educated lawyer/businessman today (who's a Democrat) and we touched on these things (corporations taking over, the financial mess, surveillance, etc.) and he flat out told me that I'm nuts. Now, this is the reality that we face. Even the most educated and sophisticared of the bunch think we're all nuts! Of course, along with us came a little Republican who was screaming on the issue of healthcare that it should stay as it is because it's perfec, fine those who don't have insurance & force them to pay because 'as we all know the only reason why they don't have insurance is because they don't want to and why should I pay for them?' - Aaaaarg! I give up! I give you guys credit if you can deal with those whose brains have been washed with bleach!
