The death toll of 156 comes from the Chinese side. The Wall Street Journal has now run an OpEd from Rebiya Kadeer, the woman who is President of the World Uyghur Congress (and blamed by Chinese authorities for the unrest).
She reports 400 dead, and possibly 100 more in another city.
