The Penn State Scandal - More than Meets the Eye

Here is the timeline of events by year:  (The entire grand jury report can be read here.)

1969 - Jerry Sandusky starts his coaching career at Penn State University as a defensive line coach.

1977 - Jerry Sandusky founds The Second Mile. It begins as a group foster home dedicated to helping troubled boys and grows into a charity dedicated to helping children with absent or dysfunctional families.

January 1983 - Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football's national champion for the 1982 season.

January 1987 - Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football's national champion for the 1986 season.

1994 - Boy known as Victim 7 in the report meets Sandusky through The Second Mile program at about the age of 10.

1994-95 - Boy known as Victim 6 meets Sandusky at a Second Mile picnic at Spring Creek Park when he is 7 or 8 years old.

1995-96 - Boy known as Victim 5, meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is 7 or 8, in second or third grade.

1996-97 - Boy known as Victim 4, at the age of 12 or 13, meets Sandusky while he is in his second year participating in The Second Mile program.

1996-98 - Victim 5 is taken to the locker rooms and showers at Penn State by Sandusky when he is 8 to 10 years old.

Jan. 1, 1998 - Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky's wife, as a member of Sandusky's family party for the 1998 Outback Bowl.

1998 - Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate.

Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6's mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, "I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won't get it from you. I wish I were dead."Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong.

The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge.

June 1999 - Sandusky retires from Penn State but still holds emeritus status.

Dec. 28, 1999 - Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky's wife, as a member of Sandusky's family party for the 1999 Alamo Bowl.

Summer 2000 - Boy known as Victim 3 meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is between seventh and eighth grade.

Fall 2000 - A janitor named James Calhoun observes Sandusky in the showers of the Lasch Football Building with a young boy, known as Victim 8, pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on the boy. He tells other janitorial staff immediately. Fellow Office of Physical Plant employee Ronald Petrosky cleans the showers at Lasch and sees Sandusky and the boy, who he describes as being between the ages of 11 and 13.

Calhoun tells other physical plant employees what he saw, including Jay Witherite, his immediate supervisor. Witherite tells him to whom he should report the incident. Calhoun was a temporary employee and never makes a report. Victim 8's identity is unknown.

March 1, 2002 - A Penn State graduate assistant enters the locker room at the Lasch Football Building. In the showers, he sees a naked boy, known as Victim 2, whose age he estimates to be 10 years old, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant tells his father immediately.

March 2, 2002 - In the morning, the graduate assistant calls Coach Joe Paterno and goes to Paterno's home, where he reports what he has seen.

March 3, 2002 - Paterno calls Tim Curley, Penn State Athletic Director to his home the next day and reports a version of what the grad assistant had said.

March 2002 - Later in the month the graduate assistant is called to a meeting with Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz. The grad assistant reports what he has seen and Curley and Schultz say they will look into it.

March 27, 2002 (approximate) - The graduate assistant hears from Curley. He is told that Sandusky's locker room keys are taken away and that the incident has been reported to The Second Mile. The graduate assistant is never questioned by university police and no other entity conducts an investigation until the graduate assistant testifies in Grand Jury in December 2010.

2005-2006 - Boy known as Victim 1 says that meets Sandusky through The Second Mile at age 11 or 12.

Spring 2007 - During the 2007 track season, Sandusky begins spending time with Victim 1 weekly, having him stay overnight at his residence in College Township, Pa.

Spring 2008 - Termination of contact with Victim 1 occurs when he is a freshman in a Clinton County high school. After the boy's mother calls the school to report sexual assault, Sandusky is barred from the school district attended by Victim 1 from that day forward and the matter is reported to authorities as mandated by law.

Early 2009 - An investigation by the Pennsylvania attorney general begins when a Clinton County, Pa. teen boy tells authorities that Sandusky has inappropriately touched him several times over a four-year period.

September 2010 - Sandusky retires from day-to-day involvement with The Second Mile, saying he wants to spend more time with family and handle personal matters.

Nov. 5, 2011 - Sandusky is arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts.

Nov. 7, 2011 - Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly says Paterno is not a target of the investigation into how the school handled the accusations. But she refuses to say the same for university President Graham Spanier. Curley and Schultz, who have stepped down from their positions, surrender on charges that they failed to alert police to complaints against Sandusky.

Nov. 8, 2011 - Possible ninth victim of Sandusky contacts state police as calls for ouster of Paterno and Spanier grow in state and beyond. Penn State abruptly cancels Paterno's regular weekly press conference.

Nov. 9, 2011 - Paterno and Spanier, one of the nation's longest-serving college presidents, are ousted, effective immediately. Earlier in the day, Paterno announced he'd retire at the end of the season. In the end, he didn't have that choice. He was fired.

As you see from the timeline above, Sandusky founded Second Mile back in 1977.  That is where he picked his victims.  Was 1998 the first time he abused a child or just the first time he was caught?  Second Mile was obviously Sandusky's personal one stop store for his deviant, sick addiction.

What the timeline also proves is that there are a lot of men that knew about Sandusky's pedophilia but did nothing to stop it.  Why?  Is it because of Sandusky's reputation as a successful coach and friendship with Joe Paterno?  Fear of losing their job? Protection of the Penn State "brand?"  Or is it something even more vile and sinister?  Were they all complicit in some deeper way to what was going on in the showers of the athletic dept at the university?

There is a complicating twist to this disgusting story.  Back to the year 1998 when Sandusky admitted to police that he showered with that 11 year old boy.   That confession was pretty strong evidence for district attorney Ray Gricar to at least proceed further with his investigation.  Instead, Gricar inexplicably decides to drop the case.  Why?

The plot thickens when DA Gricar turns up missing in 2005: (from an article by Ken Belson 11/8/11)

"On April 15, 2005, Gricar, then 59, took the day off. At about 11:30 a.m., he called his girlfriend, Patricia Fornicola, to say he was taking a drive on Route 192. About 12 hours later, she reported him missing."

"The next day, Gricar’s Mini Cooper was found in a parking lot in Lewisburg, about 50 miles from his home in Bellefonte. Gricar’s cellphone was in the car, but not his laptop, wallet or keys, which were never recovered. Months later, the laptop was found in the Susquehanna River without its hard drive, which was discovered later. It was too damaged to yield any information. On the fourth anniversary of his disappearance, investigators revealed that a search of his home computer yielded a history of Internet searches for phrases like “how to wreck a hard drive,” according to a report at the time in The Centre Daily Times."

"When Gricar disappeared helicopters, dive teams and patrol cars were deployed, and the F.B.I. was brought in. Reports of Gricar turning up in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Maryland and other states proved to be dead ends."

So what happened to Gricar?  Foul play?  Suicide?  Neither of those two options feel right to me.  It sounds more like a planned "escape" by Gricar.  That dumped laptop and "wrecked hardrive" with evidence he'd been researching how to destroy one, points to that.

But why would this man, who according to his friend and fellow district attorney, Robert Buehner, Jr,  just disappear when his life was apparently going along very well?  He seemingly had a happy life with his girlfriend and a good relationship with his daughter.

“I don’t think you’ll find too many district attorneys who disappear,” said Ken Mains, a detective who works on cold cases in Lycoming County. “D. B. Cooper, Amelia Earhart, Jimmy Hoffa, until a body is found, there are going to be conspiracy theories.

So, how does Gricar's dropping the case against Sandusky in 1998,  the silence of all those powerful men at Penn State that knew of Sandusky's perversion, Gricar's  disappearance and the Second Mile Foundation all tie together?

Of course this is mere speculation on my part but the first thing that came to my mind was that Second Mile may be a front for a child sex  ring.  One that caters to many powerful, wealthy men in the area who have the same predilection for young children that Sandusky has and that somehow Gricar was involved.  How he was involved remains a mystery.  He could have been involved himself personally or perhaps he was warned off the case, suffered a guilty conscience and decided to blow the whistle but was warned against doing so.  Or perhaps, he was abducted by a UFO that day in April 2005.

It's all just speculation & allegations at this point.  We may never know the truth.  But I'd love to see ALL the cockroaches involved in this scandal  brought to light and justice.  It's all about the children.  (*remember that you dumbass Penn State students protesting (partying) in the name of Joe "Pa.")

This entire sordid  case sounds like a fictional novel and the ending has yet to be written.

Speaking of novels,  Jerry Sandusky wrote a book back in 2001 titled "Touched" - the Jerry Sandusky Story - ...

Yea, how's that for irony? ~jg

*Oh, and one final interesting note:

Joe Paterno has hired the same criminal attorney used by George HW Bush during the Iran Contra Scandal.

  3. Wait a minute...did I get this right? Sandusky was never charged or tried for any of this???

You know, I was in the Valley during the McMartin case...which popular myth says was a case of the prosecution "leading" the testimony of the children.
There were long detailed programs on the case on KPFK [Pacifica] radio.

When the kids picked out the actor who played The Rifleman as one of the people who had been to the school to abuse them - the mainstream jumped all over the case like it was looney bullshit - because? because? because?
Because they said the actor had the classic "bad guy" look and that's the only reason the kids chose him from photos. Say whut?

Anyway, I don't buy it - I think the McMartin Pre-School was another pedophile ring for powerful people - Ray Buckey was way yucky

"I don't wanna go to school today
I don't like the games that the teachers play
    Ewww yucky it's Ray Buckey
    Ewww yucky it's Ray Buckey
    Ewww yucky it's Ray Buckey..."

This story was so surreal little kids couldn't make it up. All this oink about it being a "witch-hunt" is bullshit. The truth of the matter is people don't WANT to believe such things - that's why these evil monsters get away with this shit.

  12. Patrick.. this whole thing sicken me beyond words but it angers me even more. These cretins need to be exposed. They are quite aware that people don't like discussing such topics and would prefer to turn their heads and say, oh that's terrible and quickly put it out of their minds. It certainly works to their advantage, doesn't it?

A friend at work was talking about this and she was a bit misinformed about what was really going on. I started talking about Second Mile and why the perv founded it. She seemed a bit incredulous that something that organized and horrible could really happen. I then went to youtube and played her the first part of the documentary on the Franklin scandal and told her. "There, that's what happens to all those missing children on milk cartons". Her eyes were opened whether she liked it or not.

It's time people stop hiding their heads in the sand and start acting like grownups so that we can shine a bright light on these monsters so that we can save the children.

  14. Why "normal" people, witnesses, look the other way and compartmentalize the horror into a distant "mind closet" is one aspect that amazes. Too horrific to believe? No. It is a glimpse into the true nature of EVIL, and the depths to which it descends.

No pity for the perverts. A crossbow dart to the heart or head for all such hell-bound mutants is justified. No, not just that kind of justice. Humanity should embark upon a latrine-cleaning of all such filth, expose them, try them, incarcerate them, or administer a cleansing 86 to rid the world of such evil predators.

  18. Paul Bynum graduated from college in 1972 and joined the Hermosa Beach police department a year later.
In 1979, Paul Bynum was forced out of the police department without an explanation despite an unblemished record. After Bynum had wrapped up an investigation of a series of murders of teenage girls in nearby Redondo Beach, culminating in the arrest and conviction of serial killers Roy Norris and Lawrence Bittaker, police chief Frank Beeson pressured Bynum to take a stress leave.

In 1986 he was called to testify at the trial of Ray Buckey by prosecutor Lael Rubin. The morning he was to appear a juror’s home was burglarized and Bynum’s testimony was rescheduled for the next morning. “Neither side is going to like what I have to say,” he told Cody. For one thing, there was the matter of Bynum’s lost citation books, records he’d kept while a detective in Hermosa Beach. When the police arrested Ray Buckey on molestation charges, the “lost” books were discovered on the preschool attendant’s desk. What were official police records doing in Buckey’s home? And Prosecutor Rubin had intended to ask Bynum about a map turned up by DA investigators in March 1986, pin-pointing the location of turtle shells Bynum had unearthed at the lot next to the McMartin preschool. (The children claimed teachers had killed turtles to demonstrate what would happen to them and their families if they talked about the molestations. Bynum, while retained by the defense, had managed to corroborate a key point in the testimony of the children.)

Bynum’s court appearance was preempted by “suicide,” although the timing left some parents in the case convinced he’d been murdered.3 His body was discovered by his wife at 5:45 in the morning. He died of a head shot from a .38 caliber pistol. “None of the half dozen people questioned who were close to Bynum could think of any reason why his involvement in the case might have driven him to suicide,” reported the Easy Reader in Manhattan Beach.

The traumatic crimes reported by the toddlers bear an uncanny resemblance to mind control programming, a specialty of certain classified federal agencies and cult cut-outs on the black budget payroll.8 The children are often ridiculed because some of their charges are impossible. Tunnels under the preschool? Too ludicrous to consider. But as it happens, there were tunnels, confirmed in 1993 by a team of five scientists from leading universities.~Ibid

  20. No worries last year the Pope said it was normal back in his day...(if anyone looks like a demonic pedophile(and I'm convinced he is) it's the Pope!)

Is the game up for the Catholic Church? Sadly not, as many of its brainwashed members will continue to support it in spite of its now overt symptoms of psychopathology.
Victims of clerical sex abuse have reacted furiously to Pope Benedict's claim yesterday that paedophilia wasn't considered an "absolute evil" as recently as the 1970s.

In his traditional Christmas address yesterday to cardinals and officials working in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI also claimed that child pornography was increasingly considered "normal" by society.

"In the 1970s, paedophilia was theorised as something fully in conformity with man and even with children," the Pope said.

"It was maintained - even within the realm of Catholic theology - that there is no such thing as evil in itself or good in itself. There is only a 'better than' and a 'worse than'. Nothing is good or bad in itself."

The Pope said abuse revelations in 2010 reached "an unimaginable dimension" which brought "humiliation" on the Church.

Asking how abuse exploded within the Church, the Pontiff called on senior clerics "to repair as much as possible the injustices that occurred" and to help victims heal through a better presentation of the Christian message.

"We cannot remain silent about the context of these times in which these events have come to light," he said, citing the growth of child pornography "that seems in some way to be considered more and more normal by society" he said.

But outraged Dublin victim Andrew Madden last night insisted that child abuse was not considered normal in the company he kept.

Mr Madden accused the Pope of not knowing that child pornography was the viewing of images of children being sexually abused, and should be named as such.

He said: "That is not normal. I don't know what company the Pope has been keeping for the past 50 years."

Pope Benedict also said sex tourism in the Third World was "threatening an entire generation".

Angry abuse victims in America last night said that while some Church officials have blamed the liberalism of the 1960s for the Church's sex abuse scandals and cover-up catastrophes, Pope Benedict had come up with a new theory of blaming the 1970s.

"Catholics should be embarrassed to hear their Pope talk again and again about abuse while doing little or nothing to stop it and to mischaracterise this heinous crisis," said Barbara Blaine, the head of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests,

"It is fundamentally disturbing to watch a brilliant man so conveniently misdiagnose a horrific scandal," she added.

"The Pope insists on talking about a vague 'broader context' he can't control, while ignoring the clear 'broader context' he can influence - the long-standing and unhealthy culture of a rigid, secretive, all-male Church hierarchy fixated on self-preservation at all costs. This is the 'context' that matters."

The latest controversy comes as the German magazine Der Spiegel continues to investigate the Pope's role in allowing a known paedophile priest to work with children in the early 1980s.

  21. Ray Buckey’s father, Charles, worked for Hughes Aircraft. There is an old adage that holds “Hughes is the CIA.” Charles Buckey built the McMartin Preschool. According to carbon dating readings, the tunnels unearthed beneath the preschool were dug in 1968 – the year the school was built. Buckey Sr. testified on the stand that there were no tunnels. The media has been completely silent on this score, which brings us to…~Ibid

Yup, a conspiracy from the highest echelons of the Intelligence community was involved in muffling the McMartin case.

    We will see this very same strategy used in the Penn State case. As is said, it is a matter of "national security" {grin}

  24. THE RIFLEMAN

Chuck Connors: Lucas McCain · Johnny Crawford: Mark McCain

Connors portrayed a widower who raised his son ...

Too coincidental for you perhaps? Taking a role providing a young boy as his co-star...

Conners was pinned by the McMartin children as one of the abusers that they had encountered in the tunnels and the house next door.

Just like the "non-existent" tunnels, the idea was "too fantastic" for those who would not believe these children. It was claimed that he was picked out from pictures because he has that, "classical evil face," well yea, there can be something said for classical human profiling - the soul is reflected in the face in most instances. It is a classic human self defensive mechanism to read the face such...and it is correct often enough to be a verifiable technique, regardless of the axiom, "do not judge a book by it's cover." We might inquire to the motives which pronounced this idea.

At any rate, I had the intuition that Connors was involved from the time I was listening to the testimonials and interviews and the long programming on the case that aired on KPFK at the time.
Unlike the other "outlets" in the area [LA} KPFK followed the case and all developments all the way to the discovery of the tunnels by archaeologists.

Consider this case well; there were children as young as two and a half who were raped anally at McMartin. This is nothing less than demonic.

  26. Tunnels under a preschool. So necessary right? In case of tornado? No, they don't have them there. Earthquakes? No, you don't go underground in an earthquake. In case of nuclear war? Were they also stocked with survival supplies? no. A hideout for the evil deeds of deviants? Bingo!!

No wonder there are thousands of miles of tunnels under the entire U.S.

  27. Hunter was right. btw, I checked out wikipedia's explanation of the scandal.
They go with the idea it was all made up. This "game" or "taunt" rings true as a way a pedophile would lure a child to play along.

"Some children said they were made to play a game called "Naked Movie Star" in which they were photographed nude.[4][1][21] During the trial, testimony from the children stated that the naked movie star game was actually a rhyming taunt used to tease other children—"What you say is what you are, you're a naked movie star,"—and had nothing to do with having naked pictures taken".[4

Here's what they say about the tunnels:(All cover up and lies in my opinion)
The whole thing was a complete whitewash that protected the "bigshots" involved in the abuse.....

"Others have disagreed with Stickel's conclusions. John Earle wrote in 1995 that the concrete slab floor was undisturbed except for a small patch where the sewer line was tapped into. Once the slab was removed, there was no sign of any materials to line or hold up any tunnels, and the concrete floor would have made it impossible for the defendants to fill in any tunnels once the abuse investigation began. The article concluded that disturbed soil under the slab was from the sewer line and construction fill buried under the slab before it was poured. Further, Earle noted that some fill from beneath the concrete slab was dated to the year 1940".[38]

"W. Joseph Wyatt's 2002 report[39] concluded that the "tunnels" under the preschool were more plausibly explained as a rubbish pit used by the owners of the site before the preschool's construction in 1966. Materials found during the excavation included bottles, tin cans, plywood, inner tubes, as well as the former owner's old mail box. Only three small items found near the edge of the concrete slab were dated after 1966, which Wyatt suggested were most likely dragged into the pit by rats or other scavengers. Moreover, Wyatt speculated that Stickel's conclusions were colored by his collaboration with the parents of the McMartin children."

  28. We can expect to see the same happen with the PS scandal. It will fade away as if it never happened eventually. Leaving the abuse of our children to continue endlessly by these disgusting, high powered deviants.

  29. Of course wikid-pedia goes with the standard go along to get along story. Anything to promote easy denial in a braindead society like that of Amerika.

If you read the archaeological report in detail, you KNOW that any debunking of it comes from either fear and loathing - or someone covering for the power structure that delights in child rape and vile control techniques.

Those who are awake see it is all of a kind, that the world is run by psychopathic inhuman maniacs, and the McMartin thing is just the tip of a huge iceberg. Same with Penn State.

And we all know that if the leads were all to be followed in either case, they would lead to the very pinnacles of power.

It is hard to keep one's stomach from churning and tasting bile at the back of ones throat when understanding this reality. This is why the weak willed and moral cowards will grasp at any excuse to deny it.
The game is rigged psychically in this way...the ponerists advantage.

People need to fucking grow up, such naivete is idiocy.
