Closing the 'Collapse Gap': the USSR was better prepared for collapse than the US

by Dmitry Orlov    Energy Bulletin

The subject of economic collapse is generally a sad one. But I am an optimistic, cheerful sort of person, and I believe that, with a bit of preparation, such events can be taken in stride. As you can probably surmise, I am actually rather keen on observing economic collapses. Perhaps when I am really old, all collapses will start looking the same to me, but I am not at that point yet.

And this next one certainly has me intrigued. From what I've seen and read, it seems that there is a fair chance that the U.S. economy will collapse sometime within the foreseeable future. It also would seem that we won't be particularly well-prepared for it. As things stand, the U.S. economy is poised to perform something like a disappearing act. And so I am eager to put my observations of the Soviet collapse to good use.

I anticipate that some people will react rather badly to having their country compared to the USSR. I would like to assure you that the Soviet people would have reacted similarly, had the United States collapsed first. Feelings aside, here are two 20th century superpowers, who wanted more or less the same things – things like technological progress, economic growth, full employment, and world domination – but they disagreed about the methods. And they obtained similar results – each had a good run, intimidated the whole planet, and kept the other scared. Each eventually went bankrupt.

Note that Mr. Orlov had no trouble foreseeing our collapse in 2006....

  1. Wow laudy this is depressing to the max. Although I've been pondering this for a year now and I know he's right. I believe what he says will come to pass. I do like his solutions starting with getting rid of nuclear plants (russia knows meltdown - Chernobyl) and nuclear weapons right down to taking your money out of finance and buying things of useful value. I've been saying that to family and friends since the bank failures and the GS robbery of pensions.

As for family, I'm lucky and thankful that my immediate family is only 20 minutes away. If it comes down to three or four families in a house than so be it.

My very favorite solution is his suggestion of debt forgiveness. That would be a real stimulus eh? However since this entire financial fiasco and inevitable collapse was planned by the PTB, I don't forsee that happening.

  2. Good piece Laudy!

Most Americans have not fully realized what will happen on the streets of this nation when the lights go out.

I am amazed at how naive much of the population really is. It will be a shock to many of them when the lights do finally go out.

Laudy, people won't get mad for comparing the USA to USSR. People get mad when you try and explain to them what could possibly happen in a collapse. That is when they get mad because they don't want to hear, don't want to believe it could happen to them, and with their head in the sand they do nothing to save themselves by way of preparation.

Even reading JG's idea of reducing families to one residence is showing her thoughts that it would actually be safe in a house. And it won't be. Bullets go right through the walls and fire too.

There is going to be chaos on the streets. Violence.

Take any major city for example, and the outlying surrounding areas... the concentration of humans in poor areas will cause them to spill over into richer neighborhoods with a vengeance.

Imagine hundreds if not even thousands of hungry thugs coming out of the inner cities like cockroaches and swarming over your neighborhoods raping and robbing ever step of the way.

You will not be able to defend a house- or yourself inside of it.

And JG, maybe you will want to grow a garden for food? Better not let anyone else know you have one or else.

And how about trying to defend your valuables like cars and jewelry and family heirlooms, etc?

You might want to bury what you can and hope you survive to recover it.

The collapse of America will not be like former USSR. It will be worse because we are NOT prepared for it. Millions will die, maybe tens of millions will die from violence, starvation, disease, etc. which is all part of the desired goal anyways...

Putting all your eggs in one basket, or all your loved ones in one house is not a good idea when the lights go out.

    Are you prepared?

  3. If we collapse all at once, it could be like that. But the rest of the world seems to have decided to help us go down slow...It will be painful either way. And it's a good idea to learn some of the skills that allowed our grandparents (or greats) to survive the 30s.

The word that keeps coming to me is "retrenchment". It means not only cutting back on expenses but also making inner fortifications, which in this case is mostly psychological/philosophical. We need to give up our illusions and find ways to work with our neighbors.
