Iran Had a Democracy Before We Took It Away

Posted on Jun 22, 2009

By Chris HedgesIranians do not need or want us to teach them about liberty and representative government. They have long embodied this struggle. It is we who need to be taught. It was Washington that orchestrated the 1953 coup to topple Iran’s democratically elected government, the first in the Middle East, and install the compliant shah in power.

  1. The obvious and sad thruth is that Iranians seem to know more about democracy than their self-appointed "superior" opponents to the Wests and they've shown this time and again. If only the self-righteous and sheepish Americans could be half of what the Iranians are, we wouldn't be posting this today!

Have to agree. I remember that after I came back from Ohio 2004, I tried to organize a protest. had it in Minneapolis, right outside of the local community radio station, KFAI. The goal was to start a movement, similar to other countries.

On the day of the protest, 8 people showed up.

Of the 8 people, two were Canadians and three were NORWEGIANS visiting. They had heard about it and showed up.

We played a game. it was called

    Find the Americans.

    Sad.

That is funny yet sad and so illustrative of the state of apathy, complacency & shear ignorance that's killing this country. I can share a couple of stories of my own, similar to yours & representative of the situation & why we're in the predicament we're in today.

Around the time of the bail-out (the original during Bush, not the fake parade of stupidity orchestrated by FAUX, the Republicans & their sheep), I was driving home from work one night & in the big square in the center of town, I spotted these 3 poor people with big signs protesting the bail out. As I drove by, I hunked to acknowledge their effort and thought that I should stop and stay with them but, immediately, I asked myself "what for? So that I can be protestor #4 out of 300 million people who are being affected?" People were driving by at rush hours and they weren't even noticing them. Now, that is pathetic!

As I see it, Michael, there is no hope. This country has lost it all: heart, soul, ideals, morals...
