Marine Veteran Critically Injured at Occupy Oakland March

Two-time Iraq war veteran sustains skull fracture from police projectile

Late last night, Scott Olsen, a former Marine, two-time Iraq war veteran, and member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, sustained a skull fracture after being shot in the head with a police projectile while peacefully participating in an Occupy Oakland march.  The march began at a downtown library and headed towards City Hall in an effort to reclaim a site—recently cleared by police—that had previously served as an encampment for members of the 99% movement.

Scott joined the Marines in 2006, served two-tours in Iraq, and was discharged in 2010.  Scott moved to California from Wisconsin and currently works as a systems network administrator in Daly, California.

Scott is one of an increasing number of war veterans who are participating in America’s growing Occupy movement. Said Keith Shannon, who deployed with Scott to Iraq, “Scott was marching with the 99% because he felt corporations and banks had too much control over our government, and that they weren’t being held accountable for their role in the economic downturn, which caused so many people to lose their jobs and their homes.”

Scott is currently sedated at a local hospital awaiting examination by a neurosurgeon.  Iraq Veterans Against the Wars sends their deepest condolences to Scott, his family, and his friends.  IVAW also sends their thanks to the brave folks who risked bodily harm to provide care to Scott immediately following the incident.

  1. So,,, not a good place to take the family huh ? The first fatality, and there will be fatalities, will bring about more protest and the globalist wet dream of martial law can be implemented. Garden Plot,Cable Splice here we come. And the protesters are being used to bring it about. Mexican truckers are here since yesterday. Every attempt to piss off America is being used. Austerity has begun. An organized boycott of global corporations would be more effective. Hit them where it hurts,in the pocketbook. Recall politicians. Fill the statehouses. Get those kids off the streets before it hits the fan!

  2. We should be doing it ALL korny. Protesting, boycotting, taking our money out of the banks, cutting up our credit cards and yelling at the top of our lungs out of our windows. We should be coming at them from all directions without stop.

We have no choice but to fight back with everything we've got. Or we could sit back and wave the white flag of surrender. We already know how that worked in Libya. If we do nothing, we've already lost.

  3. Those are good suggestions JG, but they aren't SCARY!!! What with All Souls Day, Hell 'o We En, approaching, shouldn't we scare em more with far more unpredictable, dastardly, urgently insurgent scenes of austerity reversed?! Austerity on Them?! Cancel their licentiousness -- they've been exceeding the humane speed limit.

With some devious brainfarting, I can come up with limitless "Acts of Rebellion" that short-circuit, shortsheet, and pants the predicktable cyclepaths.

  4. Here's a good one Boom. How bout anonymous takes control of the airwaves ala V for Vendetta on 11/9/11 (there are those #'s again) the day the fascists test their new EAS ?

Btw, the guy that is seriously injured in that 1st video is a veteran of the Iraq war.

  5. Yes Draconia has arrived as storm troopers right out of sci fi....

Going to a gun fight with a sign is seeming more and more ludicrous to me each day...it's going to be martial law anyway, WTF?

I cannot well up any "peaceful" feelings watching this sort of thing.
    Sorry......

  6. I can't either Will. Which is the reason I shouldn't be on the streets and should instead just post on this blog :) Being peaceful is the only way to go ...along with the other things suggested.

OWS everywhere are protesting in solidarity with the Oakland attack last night right now. Oakland is also back in the streets with even more people. Go Oakland!

  7. That's a really good point, Rogue1. "Going to a gun fight with a sign is seeming more and more ludicrous to me each day…". This point was made recently in something I was reading. Is it not ludicrous to "peacefully" protest unarmed knowing you will be confronted with a phalanx of riot-geared storm troopers? Is that wise? Is it somehow noble in singularly powerful, like that one lone Chinese man standing in front of the tanks in Tianamen Square?

O.K., everybody's Angry! So they leave all their weapons at home, and go sit unarmed and vulnerable in a park indefinitely with a bunch of other people they don't know, to be besieged by the jackboots at their pick of time, and methods...? This seems strategically weak and misdirected. Maybe I don't get the whole assymetrical warfare thinga ma jig? Make your point by being out-of-character "passive" to a fault. Maybe yell some stuff, vociferously "protest", hold a sign, possess a piece of public ground.

Seems ineffectual. I like M's M.O. better. And then, I think "posse-ing up" to round up the outlaws seems like at least you're doing something constructive.

The Veterans should take a stand here in their Homeland. They need to realize they're being sent on fools errands, whilst the bad guys have been infiltrating under the wire for years. The CO's and chain of command has been compromised. WE the People, will back them up in fighting for the things worth believing in and fighting for... FIRST -- deliver Freedom at home. All these BS resource war grabs and strategic power plays serve private and corporate interests. None of it helps America, or Americans. And the countries and innocents suffering the outrages of imperialistic wars should weigh heavily upon the hearts of this nation's warriors. Don't be a Patriot who lost his country because he was tricked into serving in some God-forsaken outpost. Oldest trick in the book for psycho kings and queens.

  8. Two time Iraq war veteran comes back home and is wounded by thugs in his own government. Wow.

And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for...

  9. Boomer & Will..... so far it's been 40 days and this is the first serious injury by the cops. The fact that it was a two time Iraq war veteran is NOT gonna help the Oakland police force's PR. THIS incident will bring MORE military into the streets on the people's side.

If you guys have a better suggestion about how to fight and resist at this time, let's hear it :) They are talking tonight at this moment in Oakland of forming a general strike. YAY!

  10. You guys really need to get onto livestream and watch this stuff. This is history in the making. To say nothing of the fact that it is the most exciting reality tv show EVER... At least 9 arrests in NYC probably for marching in the street and holding up traffic.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Somebody or a group of somebodies should join the car traffic and then just get out and snarl the whole fucking thing.
You asked for tactics...well there's a start, maybe some guys with trash trucks could really block the blvd. Tie up intersections.
    C'mon kids, get creative.

  12. They are getting bolder now it seems Will. They are making plans for the general strike right now in Oakland. ...

  13. Good, they need to shut the city down...with a hoop and a hooerin' ball.

In the spirit of Crazy Horse.

Scott Olsen -- the person the police bombed -- is in critical condition.

  17. It needs pointing out that the "Protests of the 70s" did not end the Vietnam War. They ended the draft. The War in Indochina was lost militarily.

    The US was defeated.

A truth covered up again by left gatekeepers like Olbermann and Letterman, who wouldn't have their faces on television if they weren't shills for the system television represents.

  20. Thanks for the reminder Deb.

    I was angry.

There is that difference between aggression and self defense.

But the idea from sports that, "the best defense is offense" is doublethink and Newspeak. I get that.

That is why, like you I am not out on the streets begging rupture.

  21. It was the funding for HAARP and NASA shuttle program. IMCC budgets exploded with Nix. "participatory management," and Laird forced Macnamara to get out of the big game. B-1 bomber, the Trident nuclear submarine, cruise missiles and CIA intel developement.
Time to cut forces to get the WMD and funds in the Coproate pockets. That was when the R&D took off.
