The European Parliament inquiry into alleged spying by the US and EU countries will hold hearings with their authorities, legal and IT experts, NGOs, data protection authorities, national parliaments following this issue and private firms involved in data transfers, the Civil Liberties Committee decided on Wednesday. The first hearing takes place on 5 September.

Recent attention concerning National Security Agency (NSA) surveillance pertains to unauthorized disclosures of two different intelligence collection programs. Since these programs were publicly disclosed over the course of two days in June, there has been confusion about what information is being collected and what authorities the NSA is acting under. This report clarifies the differences between the two programs and identifies potential issues that may help Members of Congress assess legislative proposals pertaining to NSA surveillance authorities.

"While Grybauskaite [Lithuanian Council Presidency] said on Thursday that the Europeans wanted to hold two separate sets of talks with the U.S., just a day later she said one was dropped, along with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. “Intelligence matters and those of national security are not the competence of the EU,” Barroso said." (Activist Post, link): http://www.activistpost.com/2013/07/britain-and-sweden-block-critical-talks.html

Tony Bunyan, Statewatch Director, observes: "Instead of creating two EU-USA working groups as promised, the UK and Sweden veto means there will only be one working group on PRISM and data protection. The working group that has been vetoed would have covered intelligence and espionage collection and usage - the role of the USA's NSA and UK's GCHQ gathering all forms of communications not just between EU governments but also those of individuals and groups "of interest to the state" in Europe and the rest of the world.."

"The refusal of entry into their airspace by European states for the Bolivian presidential jet on the basis of suspicions that Edward Snowden was on board was an astonishing manoeuvre that flies in the face of the EU’s commitment to democracy, human rights and international law. The potential damage that this action does to both the reputation of the European Union and respect for international law within and beyond its borders cannot be understated. The forcing down and searching the Bolivian President’s jet was a clear breach of fundamental principles of diplomatic immunity and inviolability. Such principles are the bedrock of good international relations and customary international law."

Documents obtained by the German magazine Der Spiegel from whistleblower Edward Snowden show that the USA's NSA has been spying on the diplomatic missions of the EU at the UN in New York and and its offices in Washington. This involved placing bugs in their offices and intercepting its computer networks. The NSA was able to listen in to discussion as well as getting access to emails and documents.

The documents also show that just over five years ago the NSA conducted an electronic eavesdropping operation in the Council of the European Union's Justis Lipsius headquarters in Rue de la Loi.

    via REUTERS

Well-known hacker Barnaby Jack has died in San Francisco, a week before he was due to show off techniques for attacking implanted heart devices that he said could kill a man from 30 feet away.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office said he died in the city on Thursday. It gave no details.

Jack, a security expert, became one of the most famous hackers on the planet after a 2010 demonstration in which he forced ATMs to spit out cash, dubbed “Jackpotting.”

The Washington Post reported on 16 September 2001 that the pilot of Flight 77 was former F-4 fighter pilot Charles Burlingame III, who in his last Navy job, developed anti-terror strategies for the Navy before retiring to fly for American Airlines. He drafted the Pentagon’s emergency response plan in case it was hit by a civilian airliner. Flight 77 allegedly struck the Pentagon. It is not clear which MASCAL Charles Burlingame III authored.

  17. The Communist Bill of Lading? A harp of strung wire and timber boxed and struck by felt hammers? A tonal relationship tried-on like the soiled undergarments of the rest home tenants?

Twas here and there, yet not quite everywhere that blank eyes began that stare, and craniums opened by jackhammers shown themselves to be emptied like flasks long drained by parched lips. Some wailed of crimes, some sang praises of glory for the liberation of the blessed soul of the dole master...alas his retirement come. But the war droned on without him. Just one plastic widget after another printed in 3D and assembled by necrobiotic translations of the Talmud. Powdered blood. All that is missing now is the chrome hood ornament.

Agitation education in the derogatorium whence headfilled bound rush thee, to hinterland park for a big deal launched by a big squeal of oinkish PR. But gambled not, for all is in the fix, and betwixt you and I t'is known as underground mirth as told by Jenifer Snugmuffin in the infamous 'Twatberry Tales', wherein are said things marked out by the censor's furious black markers, and alas known not to the steaming masses. Yes covert tales of tails blessed – and cursed. Swollen breasts unhorsed and straddled by heathen gear-queers in molten masks screaming.

Yes yes, we all knew. But few would say.

"The Robot stories – by which I mean the nine tales comprising I, Robot and the two novels, The Naked Sun and The Robots of Dawn – portray the evolution of robots and AI mainframes into the guiding instruments of human society. Particularly, in the final tale of the I, Robot collection (“The Evitable Conflict”), we see Asimov’s AI management platforms quietly transition into leadership roles through generalization of his First Law of Robotics – the AI have concluded that not taking control of human society, alleviating suffering and corruption, would be tantamount to allowing humanity to come to harm by inaction."

  25. The Two Faux Democracies Threaten Life On Earth – Paul Craig Roberts

Nuclear war is on Washington’s agenda. The rise of the Neocon Nazis has negated the nuclear disarmament agreements that Reagan and Gorbachev made. The extraordinary, mainly truthful 2012 book, The Untold History of the United States by Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick, describes the post-Reagan breakout of preemptive nuclear attack as Washington’s first option.

The post World War II wars originate in Washington and Israel. No other country has imperial expansionary ambitions. The Chinese government has not seized Taiwan, which China could do at will. The Russian government has not seized former constituent parts of Russia, such as Georgia, which, provoked by Washington to launch an attack, was instantly overwhelmed by the Russian Army. Putin could have hung Washington’s Georgian puppet and reincorporated Georgia into Russia, where it resided for several centuries and where many believe it belongs.

For the past 68 years, most military aggression can be sourced to the US and Israel. Yet, these two originators of wars pretend to be the victims of aggression. It is Israel that has a nuclear arsenal that is illegal, unacknowledged, and unaccountable. It is Washington that has drafted a war plan based on nuclear first strike. The rest of the world is correct to view these two rogue unaccountable governments as direct threats to life on earth.

  28. Ithink the plan is 693 and not 396. The easier track is to covert humans to robots versus replacing humans with robots. cheaper and provides the thrills for psychopaths. The benefits outweigh the carbon footprint.

  29. It is bizarre isn't it? I don't bother to figure out why anymore. It's a state of affairs I can't understand. I find this time more critical than any in the last five years, yet it seems that sequester has struck coto.

Dreamcatchers or body snatchers. Do you have any clues?

  30. I can only say that it will happen when the sun shines and the birds are singing. The morn of 911 was heavenly until the smoke and bangs broke the dream.

S.O.S. to all ships at see. The Titanic is sinking.

  32. I could be wrong, but I think we have a long slow crumble ahead.

I was expecting pogroms and concentration camps back in the 80s.

It is a train wreck in slomo. The status quo likes this stasis more than we do...at least those of us who haven't slipped over the edge yet.

I'd be fine with the shit hitting the fan after I have gone to the happy hunting grounds...now that I am so "aged" ... Lol

  33. Slowly is a perception I see in the past as now it may still seem slow, the cycles are much faster. The danger is as the progression trods along a smaller and smaller fuse is visible and a smaller charge is required to devastate.
