The Truth Alone Will Not Set You Free

info controlBy Chris Hedges               TruthDig         June 29, 2009

The ability of the corporate state to pacify the country by extending credit and providing cheap manufactured goods to the masses is gone. The pernicious idea that democracy lies in the choice between competing brands and the freedom to accumulate vast sums of personal wealth at the expense of others has collapsed. The conflation of freedom with the free market has been exposed as a sham. The travails of the poor are rapidly becoming the travails of the middle class, especially as unemployment insurance runs out and people get a taste of Bill Clinton’s draconian welfare reform. And class warfare, once buried under the happy illusion that we were all going to enter an age of prosperity with unfettered capitalism, is returning with a vengeance.

  1. I grind my teeth when I read things like...

"Those who care about the plight of the working class and the poor must begin to mobilize quickly or we will lose our last opportunity to save our embattled democracy."

The "last opportunity" was lost a long time ago. "Embattled democracy?" It's gone. Talk about rhetoric (is that redundant?)... we have to stop talking about how we are going to "save" something that's gone... and probably never existed in the first place.

So now what? You know what. Bald-faced coups being engineered... the "Supreme Court" nattering about Saudi "sovereign immunity," how obvious does it have to get? It won't be a "revolution," it will be a civil war... and the opening shots will be fired by those who believe they are "saving" something that does not exist.

They will be armed and financed by those who aren't "saving" anything... they are simply taking all of what they don't already own.

The "realpolitikers" are the most deluded of all.

  2. I like Chris Hedges but he doesn't see the whole picture. The fascist plan, which started with the inception of the Federal Reserve, is complete. All that's left for them is the tying up of loose ends. They have all their people in place along with all their draconian laws. The total police state is approaching rapidly.

Waldo is right. I tend to believe those that are saying that things are going to get very ugly this fall. The crackdown could come with the lab created "swine flu" and forced innoculations. Be forewarned and be prepared.

  3. If they can convince us that the war is lost, they don't have to fight it.

Much of this game depends on belief systems. Remember Kissinger's fearful comment at Bohemian Grove one year: "what if they realize no one is really in charge?"

  6. people who talk about "change" are totally full of crap. We don't need change. We need something completely different. Is that "change?" bladda bladda yabba.

We'll see some "change" when some fats are trussed-up like mummys with 10-penny nails through their heads. Until then. they gotcha by the balls... or whatever sensitive part you care to claim.

  9. Yes indeed JG. He does not grasp the basic formula at all. Just the results. I really dislike all the NEO-CON Christian right nonsense.

These baby eaters are no more Christian than they are RIGHT. They are mere antagonists/antithesis directing the population to accept the 'changling world order.'

Obama & Co. cannot even step out of the Bush/Cheney shoes. Illusion, the master trick of the darkness, and Hedges, liberals and the world suffer severely from night blindness.

  12. Neo-cons are prime examples of those who join xyz in order to gain POWER. Power is the be-all and end-all for them, they have no other ideal or goal.

In every movement there are some opportunists who come for that reason. And successful movements often fall to them after an establishing period, and turn into just another version of what was fought against.

Awareness and vigilance must be maintained; complacency is a trap.

  14. To the extent that the title of this article has any meaning...

...speaking and espousing the truth is just so much rhetoric. Actually KNOWING the truth means that you've put some "skin in the game." That means, you've actually acted like you KNOW what the truth of the matter is.

Until we act, we don't know squat. In fact, every single action we ever take is but a reflection of the truth we are willing to accept about our reality.

The only actions taken by the collective have lead us to where we are today...hanging by a thread between tyranny and slavery.

I guess we must really believe, as a civilization, in the power of tyranny and the productivity of slavery.

If we didn't, we wouldn't be here now.
